Dynamic Estimation of Error Bounds in Motion Prediction

论坛主题:Network latency has been a fundamental limitation to the development of interactive collaborative virtual environments (CVEs). Existing works to address the network latency problem mainly focus on developing motion prediction methods that appear statistically accurate for certain applications. However, it is often not known how reliable they are in a CVE. In this talk, we discuss our latest progress in this project since 2009. We first argue the importance of being able to construct an error bound in motion prediction. Based on the elliptic motion predictor that we have developed for predicting the mouse motion during a CVE application, we discuss the sources of error introduced by the motion predictor and propose to address the errors by estimating the error bounds of each prediction made by the motion predictor. We then discuss how we may estimate the upper and lower error bounds, and present a simple feedback mechanism to refine the estimated error bounds. Finally, we evaluate the effectiveness of our method through a number of experiments.

研讨人: Rynson Lau received a first-class B.Sc. honors degree in Computer Systems Engineering in 1988 from the University of Kent, UK, and a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science in 1992 from the University of Cambridge, UK. He is currently a Professor at the University of Durham, UK. Prior to the current appointment, he taught at the City University of Hong Kong from 1998 to 2005 and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University from 1993 to 1998. From 1992 to 1993, he held a research position at the University of York, UK.
