论坛主题:Energy efficiency is a major concern in modern high performance computing system design. Today it is not uncommon for large scale computing systems and data centers to consume massive amounts of energy, typically several megawatts in powering and cooling. The enormous energy consumption results in large electricity bills and reduced system reliability due to increased heat emissions. The continuing need to increase the size and scale of these data centers means energy consumption potentially limits future deployments of high performance computing systems.

Improving energy efficiency is a challenging task in high performance computing: application performance must not be adversely degraded when energy consumption is reduced. Nevertheless, in reality power reduction normally leads to performance degradation. In this talk, I will present a comprehensive framework that addresses this challenge. This framework enables in depth understanding of power, performance, and their correlations, and exploits opportunities and novel techniques to reduce power while maintaining performance. The results on real systems show that the framework can be used to identify opportunities for energy savings and improve energy efficiency by up to 20% with little to no impact on performance for a large spectrum of applications.

报告人简介:Rong Ge is an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science at Marquette University. She received the PhD degree in computer science from Virginia Tech. Her research interests include performance modeling and analysis, parallel and distributed systems, energy efficient computing, high performance computing, and computational science. She is a member of the IEEE and the IEEE Computer Society, and a member of the ACM and Upsilon Pi Epsilon. Contact her at rong.ge@marquette.edu.
