内容摘要:
In most developed and rapidly developing countries, there has been a continual increase in life expectancy primarily due to improvements in public health, nutrition and medicine. However, this is now coupled with aging population demographics and falling birth rates, which when combined, are expected to significantly burden the socio-economic well-being of many of these countries. In fact, never before in human history have we been confronted with such a large aging population, nor have we developed solid, cost-effective solutions for the healthcare and social needs and well-being of the elderly. In this presentation, we will describe an ongoing project in U-Healthcare as a contribution of the application of science and technology for the benefit of humanity, especially the elderly. This project is focused on a smart medical home as a convergence of ubiquitous-health (U‐Health) and ubiquitous-environment (U-Environment). The focus of our research is on helping elderly people live a more independent and healthy life as long as possible, in their own home, while being remotely monitored and assisted in an unobtrusive and seamless manner. In this overview presentation, through a few examples, we will discuss some initial ideas about the challenges of the project and what are the research issues we are pursuing. In particular, we will focus on the critical role of computer science, computation and engineering in developing innovative, low-cost and high impacting solutions to the pending elderly demographic and associated healthcare crisis. Such a crisis is projected to be particularly acute in China.
报告人简介:
M. Jamal Deen was born in Georgetown, Guyana, South America. He completed a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. His Ph.D. dissertation was on the design and modeling of a new CARS spectrometer for dynamic temperature measurements and combustion optimization in rocket and jet engines, and was sponsored and used by NASA, Cleveland, USA. He is currently Distinguished University Professor and Senior Canada Research Chair in Information Technology at McMaster University. His current research interests are nano-electronics and opto-electronics and their emerging applications to life and environmental sciences. His research record includes more than 500 peer-reviewed articles (about 20% are invited), 17 invited book chapters and 6 awarded patents which were extensively used in industry. He is also the co-author of two textbooks. He has also successfully transferred powerful engineering and circuit models to numerous companies in Canada, USA and Japan.
Dr. Deen was a Fulbright Scholar from 1980 to 1982 and an American Vacuum Society Scholar from 1983 to 1984. His other honors include the Callinan Award (2002) and the Electronics and Photonics Award (2011) from the Electrochemical Society; a Humboldt Research Award (2006); the RSC’s Eadie Medal (2008); and the Fessenden Medal (2011), McNaughton Gold Medal (2013 –highest award for engineers), and Ham Education Medal (2014), all from IEEE Canada, and thirteen best paper/poster/presentation awards.. He has received three honorary doctorate degrees in recognition of his exceptional scholarly achievements and service contributions, and exemplary professionalism. Dr. Deen’s peers have elected him to Fellow status in ten national academies and professional societies including Fellow of The Royal Society of Canada (FRSC) - The Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada – which is the highest honor for academics and scholars in Canada; a Fellow of the American Physical Society (FAPS); a Fellow of the Electrochemical Society (FECS); a Fellow of The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (FIEEE); and an Honorary Member of the World Innovation Foundation – the Foundation’s highest honor. Recently he is elected as President of The Academy of Science, The Royal Society of Canada.
