报告摘要:The Smart City is a safe city. Regrettably, an ever-widening spectrum of threats face our societies, and our increasing societal interdependencies leads to increasing vulnerabilities. It is a common misconception - indeed - a sometimes willful ignorance of historical precedent - to think that the threats from, say, chemical weapons are rare or unlikely. The threat from national and subnational groups with a range of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNE) options has never been greater, not least in the Middle East where this author is based. The solution is to provide target-agnostic real-time sensor networks fully integrated into the fabric of the Smart City capable of the derivation of minimum-bias information from spatially and temporally separated mobile and static heterogenous sensors, with that information leading seamlessly to actionable knowledge. While the threat may not disappear, such sensor networks can discourage the perpetrators, and mitigate the effects of their actions. This presentation offers real solutions being implemented in the CBRNE space, and offers ways society can stay ahead of those who wish it harm.
Biography:John Hassard is a scientist, academic, and entrepreneur with strong analytical and informatics skills, and complementary leadership, organizational, commercial and engineering expertise, with a strong track record in fundamental research in particle, nuclear, biotechnology, environmental, energy and security issues. He is involved in the D0 experiment in Fermilab. He has interests in energy issues, and has worked on policy and technologies of nuclear power and the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Hassard founded the tidal power company HydroVenturi Ltd and is non-executive Chairman. He also has interest in applications of particle physics in biotechnology. Hassard is interested in environmental matters and has developed an advanced air pollution analysis system.
