报告简介:Abstract—The traditional information retrieval (IR) paradigm has been keyword-based, which exhibits a low-cost and easy-to-use approach. Such a simple approach however suffers from the problems of ambiguity and sometimes over-abstract keyword descriptions. On the other hand, the prevailing multimedia systems and applications have been relying on the content-based retrieval (CBR) and/or query-by-example (QBE) paradigm. While the CRB/QBE approach is easy to use from the end-user’s perspective, it is not always possible for a user to prepare/have a suitable "example" in hand; besides, the lack of semantics inherent to this approach may cause strange things to happen (i.e., funny results). In this talk, we argue that multimedia retrieval should be knowledge-based and semantics-driven, preferably with personalization support. Through a case study on a distributed multimedia recipe database (DMRD) system, we show that CBR (including keyword or QBE) + Domain Knowledge + User-community Profiling is a good way to go forward. Experiments on a prototype of DMRD system demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of such a hybrid approach we are advocating.
Qing Li received his PhD degree from the University of Southern California in Computer Science. Before joinning City University of Hong Kong in Sept 1998, Dr Li has taught at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Australian National University (Canberra, Australia). Dr. Li is a Guest Professor (Software Technology) of the Zhejiang University (Hangzhou, China) -- the leading university of the Zhejiang province where he was born. He is also a Visiting Professor of the University of Science and Technology of China, Zhong Shan (Sun Yat-sen) University, and the Knowledge Grid Group in the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Science (Beijing, China), in addition to be an Adjunct Professor of the Hunan University (Changsha, China) where he got his BEng. degree from the Department of Computer Science in 1982. Li has been actively involved in the research community by serving as an editor and reviewer for technical journals, and as an organizer/co-organizer of numerous international conferences. His research areas range from data modeling, multimedia indexing and retrieval, workflow and Web services, to data warehousing/mining and elearning; he has published over 200 papers in these areas on refereed international journals and conferences, including two papers on ACM Transactions and six papers on IEEE Transactions (in particular, four on TKDE, one on Transactions on Multimedia, and one on Transactions on Education). He has served as a Guest Editor of special issues for IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, ACM Transactions on Internet Technology, Information Sciences, Knowledge and Information Systems: An International Journal, among others. He is an Editor of the ACM Transactions on Internet Technology, World Wide Web: Internet and Web Information Systems (Springer), the International Journal of Web Engineering (Rinton Press, USA), and an area editor of the Int"l Journal of Distance Education Technology (Idea Group Pub., USA). He is currently a Senior Member of IEEE, a councilor of the Database Society of Chinese Computer Federation, and is a Steering Committee member of DASFAA, ICWL, and the international WISE Society.
